Roulette Wheel Layout

The roulette wheel is not arranged like the betting table. Wheel order spreads colors, high and low numbers, and odd and even numbers around the rim.

Quick answer

European roulette uses 37 pockets: 0 and 1-36. American roulette uses 38 pockets: 0, 00, and 1-36. The added double zero is why American roulette has a higher house edge.

European wheel

European roulette has one green zero and a 2.70% house edge on standard bets.

Wheel layout vs table layout

The table is for placement

The table groups numbers into rows, dozens, columns, colors, and outside bet areas so players can place chips clearly.

The wheel is for resolution

The ball lands on the wheel. The wheel order distributes neighboring pockets, but it does not make any number due after prior spins.
